How low-level laser therapy can help with diabetic ulcers
About 15% of diabetics will develop one or more diabetic ulcers at some point in their lives. Diabetic ulcers are non-healing and long-lasting chronic sores or open wounds on the bottom of the feet. They are resistant to conventional treatment and are the most prevalent cause of non-traumatic limb amputations.
According to researchers, low-level laser therapy can stimulate healing in patients with diabetic ulcers. A study group of 68 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and foot ulcers that have lasted more than four weeks and were less than 6 x 6cm in size, was divided into two. One group received LLLT with conventional therapy and a control group was treated with conventional therapy alone. The wounds of the patients that received LLLT healed significantly better than those in the non-treated group. This shows that LLLT is an effective treatment for wound contraction in diabetic patients suffering from diabetic ulcers.
